obs2|Eyelid mass|seen in right upper lid, near lateral margin of iris. Heaped-up mass in medial canthus of right eye. Midline-philtrum lesions is hinted, as is left commissural lesion.

This is the original quarter-plate ambrotype. Available in color reproduction, too. Appears that someone tried to clean the plate and ruined it.

Hamilton '63 [p 361] / Ostendorf '98 [p 383] says that (a) the original of this image is "very dark, giving Lincoln's complexion a black and leathery appearance" and (b) a second exposure was taken at the same time as this one, but was destroyed.
