The Physical Lincoln: Too-thin images

From Lincolnwiki

For reasons unclear, many images from the Library of Congress are vertically elongated. That is, Lincoln appears taller (i.e. narrower) in these images than he does in other versions of the same image (e.g. from Mellon).

For a few of these too-narrow images, a careful assessment determined how much widening was required to restore them to their correct proportions. The answer was consistently 8.8%. Thus, you will see "widened" versions of these images that are 8.8% wider than the Library of Congress images.

The longer dimension of all these two-thin images is 1536 pixels -- I don't know why. Anyone with demanding requirements for accuracy and fidelity of such images should probably find a different source for the image.
