Ostendorf3
Photograph, probably by William Marsh, Springfield, May, 1860. Ostendorf notes: "With his features completely altered by retouching, Lincoln looks like a birdwatcher" (p38). "His features 'prettified' with India ink, Lincoln is almost unrecognizable. ... The original photograph ... is nearly obliterated by the artist's ink 'improvements'" (p39). A "restored" version of the image is presented: "The removal of the heavy India-ink lines and the strengthening of the original sepia tones have restored the portrait almost to its original appearance" (p39).
